Why I Started Nutrition Notes Blog
I still remember that chilly autumn morning in 2010 when everything changed. It was the day my grandmother, Abuela, passed away due to complications from type 2 diabetes and heart disease. She was only 62 years old. Growing up, we were inseparable, spending countless hours in the kitchen where she taught me traditional Latin American recipes that had been handed down through generations of women in our family.
Abuela's passing hit me hard, but it also sparked a curiosity about nutrition and its impact on overall health. I started reading books and scouring online resources, searching for answers to the question: "Could Abuela's fate have been different if she had better access to nutrition information?" This quest led me to pursue a degree in Nutrition Science from Oregon State University.
My Journey Begins
As an undergrad, I dove headfirst into the world of nutrition science, poring over research studies and scientific literature. Each semester, my fascination with how food interacts with our bodies only grew stronger. But it wasn't until I started volunteering at a local health clinic that I saw firsthand the gap between what people knew about nutrition and how they applied it in real life.
Many patients were misled by fad diets and pseudoscientific claims. They were looking for quick fixes instead of sustainable solutions. This experience solidified my resolve to help bridge this gap. In 2015, I graduated with a degree in Nutrition Science and became a registered dietitian.
The Turning Point
A pivotal moment came when a client asked me about the "alkaline diet" she had read about online. She was convinced it would cure her chronic health issues. As we sat down to talk, I realized that separating fact from fad wasn't just about sharing information; it required empathy and understanding of why people make certain choices.
I explained to her that while a balanced diet with whole foods is essential, there's limited scientific evidence supporting the alkaline diet's claims. Her eyes widened as she started to understand. Right then, I knew my role wasn't just about giving nutrition advice but also empowering people to make informed decisions.
From Practitioner to Blogger
As a registered dietitian, I continued working with clients and sharing evidence-based information on social media. But I felt limited by one-on-one consultations and Twitter's character limits. The desire to reach a broader audience and create a more comprehensive resource led me to start Nutrition Notes Blog in 2018.
I wanted to create a space where people could access credible nutrition information without sensational headlines or biased agendas. My goal was to provide an in-depth look at the latest scientific research, debunk common myths, and offer practical tips for healthier living.
What I Learned Along the Way
This journey has taught me that effective communication is crucial. As a health professional, it's not enough to just share facts; you have to consider the emotional and social context in which people make decisions about their well-being.
I learned to appreciate the power of storytelling, making complex scientific concepts more accessible through personal anecdotes and real-life examples. My experiences also showed me that even the best-intentioned advice can be misunderstood if not presented with empathy and compassion.
